Last year I had bought E a pop-up plastic greenhouse. We set it up in late spring, and she started a bunch of flowers in it in little pots, and they grew wonderfully and continued to flourish after being transplanted to the yard. Last fall, I packed the greenhouse back into its box and stored it on a high shelf in the garage. I didn’t want to forget where I’d put it, and I wanted to remember to start seeds a bit sooner in the spring since it was almost too warm in the greenhouse by the time we’d started it last year. So last fall I wrote this into my planner book for a random weekend in early spring:
It was a bit depressing last Monday to turn my planner book to this week and see that overly optimistic reminder.
E saw the note, and hadn’t realized I’d written it in last fall. She must have thought I was either wildly optimistic or completely delusional, because the area we’d put the greenhouse is still 3′ deep snow, aside from a narrow path for the oil delivery guy (or the cat.)
So this is the note she wrote in as response:
And we suddenly realized — that is the theme for this winter: NOT YET.
Someday we will look out the back window and see green grass and blooming roses… but NOT YET.
Someday we will look out the front window and see the driveway and the street instead of a wall of white snowbank… but NOT YET.
Someday my hip and thigh will not hurt from slipping on ice and falling down hard while clearing snow at 5:30 in the morning… but NOT YET.
Someday we can spend time outside without bundling up in long johns and snow pants and sweaters and parkas and hats and gloves and heavy socks and boots… but NOT YET.
Someday the cat will not fuss to go out and then squawk angrily that winter is all over his yard… but NOT YET.
Someday we will be able to drive without nervously edging blindly around snowbanks… but NOT YET.
Someday we will be able to cook with the windows open so fried food doesn’t make the whole house smell for days… but NOT YET.
Someday we will be able to hang laundry on the line rather than planning our menus around whether we have clothes drying on racks in the living room… but NOT YET.
And someday we will plant seeds in the greenhouse… but NOT YET.
