Woohoo for Utah! The suddenness of this one really surprised me — a federal judge ruled today that the state law limiting marriage to a man and a woman was unconstitutional. Clerks have been issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and marriages have already happened! Although the state can appeal the ruling, for now at least, Utah goes in the green category.
39.3% of people live in places where same-sex married couples have all the same state and federal rights as opposite-sex married couples.
5.6% of people live in places where civil unions or domestic partnerships offer state-level rights only.
55.1% of people live in places which do not offer any mechanism for gay and lesbian couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationships.
