Woohoo for Illinois! The gay marriage bill has passed the legislature, and the governor has promised to sign it in a festive celebration this month. Another yellow state has gone green, and the second-class status of civil unions yields to full marriage equality.
And now (or rather, once the law takes effect):
37.3% of people live in places where same-sex married couples have all the same state and federal rights as opposite-sex married couples.
6.0% of people live in places where civil unions or domestic partnerships offer state-level rights only.
56.7% of people live in places which do not offer any mechanism for gay and lesbian couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationships.
