… when your child is reading a biography of Bismarck, for fun, by candlelight, in the middle of a hurricane.
We lost power for about 20 hours with Sandy, but otherwise were fairly unscathed and are back to normal now. A huge limb fell when E was walking to her car to drive home Monday, but it missed her by… by enough. We were very thankful.
And although M is reading by candlelight in the photo above, we do have an emergency lantern that we’ve used for a couple power outages now which I would highly recommend to anyone. It lights up a whole room well enough for basic task lighting, without that “staggering around in the dark” feeling I always got with flashlights or candles.
M was monumentally bored being home alone yesterday, since he had no school, no power, and had finished all his library books. He finally went to visit a friend who lives close enough that he could get there without crossing downed power lines. I suggested that we might need to get a few books and keep them by our emergency lantern, for the next time he runs out of reading matter in a storm.
