But when E said how much she really wanted to grow roses, I happily went along to the local nursery with her to buy plants, then we spent an entire afternoon planting 4 rose bushes plus assorted annuals. The red and pink roses are Double Knockouts (a variety bred to be especially hardy — aka Roses For Dummies) and the yellow one is a Julia Child (because E wanted yellow, and it looked really nice.)
We moved the round table off our front porch and used some modular shelving originally from E’s parents’ garage to create a tiered stand for all of the potted annuals. Note also the very clean deck — we recently bought a small pressure washer, and discovered that pressure-washing a deck is a chore that a teenager actually enjoys doing.
The cat helped us with much of the planting, and he was not happy about being put back inside at the end of the day.
Oh, and if you like the patterned pots above and want to buy some, I bought these as a nested set of 3 at Rite-Aid. They were actually my Valentine’s day gift to E, which tells you something about how much her love of plants factors into our relationship!
