Last night I was dropping M off for an overnight Scout trip when one of the other moms started chatting with me.
She said, “I have the house to myself tonight, for the first time in ages! My husband is working late, and my daughter is off at a friend’s house, so it’s going to be just me and the dog. This never happens! Maybe I’ll catch up on my grading for school. Or maybe I’ll give the dog a bath.”
Now there’s a sure sign of someone who has spent too long putting her own needs last — she gets a night to herself, and she plans to give the dog a bath? So I smiled at her and said, “Forget the dog, I think you should enjoy a nice long soaking bath.”
She laughed, and her face just lit up. “You’re absolutely right! That does sound good!”
And I hope that’s how she did spend the evening, with her in the tub, and not the dog.
