E and I both use inhalers occasionally. We even use the exact same type. I picked up her prescription for her today, and had to pay $30 for it. When I picked mine up a couple weeks ago, I only had to pay $5, because my medical insurance plan is noticeably better than hers.
If it weren’t for the “Defense of Marriage Act” I would put her on my insurance in a heartbeat. Especially since it’s benefits enrollment season right now. But thanks to DOMA, I can’t do that unless I pay an “imputed income” tax on the benefit, because the federal government doesn’t recognize her as my spouse. And that “imputed income” tax would offset all the savings we would see from her being on a better plan.
And so here we are, just your average suburban married couple, going to work and raising a teenager and taking care of pets and helping an elderly parent and getting our furnace replaced — and being reminded that our government thinks we should spend $25 more to breathe just because we’re lesbians.
