M’s room smells. It’s got this funky musty sort of odor that has been getting increasingly strong over the last several months. He doesn’t bring food in there and doesn’t leave dirty clothes in there, so we figured the smell was just due to an excess of preteen hormones and sweat in the room.
However, M has been away at camp all week, and we’ve been busy washing his bedding and even his curtains, and the smell has just increased. We finally decided it has to be from the carpet, which is either just getting old and full of smells (our hope) or has some nasty mold thing happening under it (which is what we fear.) Since M tends to get sneezy in there, and the cat, who often sleeps on his floor, has worsening asthma, we suspect the latter.
So our plan for this weekend is to pick M up from camp, tell him we love him, and then empty out his bedroom so we can rip up his carpet and kill any mold. We’ll then put down some kind of laminate flooring. Exact flooring has yet to be determined. I was on the Home Depot site, trying to do some research, but got sidetracked by their Home Visualization tool which lets you see sample rooms with different types of flooring. It seemed like a useful little app, until I realized that their only sample bedroom options were “Classic Retreat,” “Metropolitan Living,” and “Cool Contemporary,” but nothing along the lines of “Preteen Packrat.”
