It was M’s last day of school on Friday, and also his best friend’s birthday. After school, M asked if he could bike over to the friend’s house to wish him happy birthday. He’s never biked that far by himself before, and while the route doesn’t involve any busy roads, it does involve a few miles of very narrow windy roads with no shoulder. But I swallowed my nervousness and said yes, he could go.
So off he went, and a couple hours later he came home. I was out in the yard, and he didn’t even pedal into the driveway. Instead, he called out, “Hi Mom, I’m going over to Nick’s, OK bye,” as he pedaled in a circle and headed back the way he’d come, to then go hang out with an neighborhood friend for another hour.
He’s loving this level of independence.
