M’s Scout troop does a service project that involves putting together six Thanksgiving dinner baskets for needy families in town. A local grocery store donates the turkeys, and then each kid is assigned one or two items to contribute. M was told to bring 4 potatoes plus a package of 12 brown & [...]

Hello, hardware store?

I was trying to swap out the corroded leaking faucet on the bathroom sink for a spiffy new one, but couldn’t loosen the fittings at all. I wondered which of the local small hardware stores might have the special type of oil that can help loosen fittings. E suggested that, since it was [...]

The sole fundraiser that M’s Scout troop does each year is sell Christmas trees. All the troops in town join together for this, and every Scout-plus-parent get various shifts. Today our shift was unloading 700 trees from a giant truck. To make it even more fun, it was 20 degrees with wind [...]
Signs of the times — the local soup kitchen

S here, and when M and I started volunteering at the soup kitchen a few years ago, we’d set tables for 70 people each time. In the summer of 2007, things slowed down a little (probably since food vs. heat was less of an issue) and we were setting up for 54. Last winter it [...]
The cat is turning pink

A few days ago, we realized that the cat was turning pink, and he’s gotten even pinker since then. The coloring is most noticeable on his belly and feet. He’s not wet or clumpy, so it’s not like he got into paint or antifreeze. M’s bucket of sidewalk chalk remains undisturbed. It’s possible that it’s dye from [...]

Gay marriage became legal there today!
And double hooray to Connecticut, for having voted down a proposal to hold a state consitutional convention, which would have been step 1 in eliminating gay marriage there. It’s reassuring to have at least one bright spot around gay marriage and the ballot box, this election season.

S here; on Friday M and I went for a walk together, which is usually when our best conversations happen. He’s been interested in Supreme Court cases lately, so he asked me to name the most famous cases over the years. I started with Roe v. Wade, then rattled off a list of cases and [...]

E here and as I’m sure everyone is doing tonight we’ve been watching the results come in. We’ve been watching ABC news and there’s been a lot of wows -
Wow, Obama won Pennsylvania! Wow, Obama won Ohio! Wow, look at her heels! Said in unison by S and I while watching Diane Sawyer cross the [...]
We voted

S here; in our town we get paper ballots and a pen to mark the oval next to the candidate’s name. Today, I carefully drew the line around the edge of the oval, and then M filled in the middle. Because we realized that, decades from now, we both want to be able to tell [...]
